A Review of 137 Cases Vertiginous Aviators in China

Abstract
Vertigo in an aviator can produce sudden incapacitation. The aim of this article is to describe the population of patients referred to the deparment of otolaryngology of number 466 hospital of air force for vertigo in the 30 years. The medical records of all patients were reviewed. The evaluation of a patient emcompassed the history, examinations and investigations necessary to diagnose the cause of vertigo, such as audiometry, caloric test with nystagmograph, CT and systematic examination of cranial nerves. Of the 137 cases studied, 15 were caused by psychoneurotic and cardiovascular disorders, 11 cases were diagnosed as cervical vertigo, 74 cases were caused by otological diseases including alternobaric vertigo, paroxysmal positional vertigo, Meniere' s disease and miscellaneous. Vertigo, cause undetermined, was the diagnosis in 37 cases. It is suggested that every effort should be made to establish the diagnosis in all cases of vertigo and make the appropriate aeromedical disposition. Of 137 cases, 66 cases were removed from flying status. For the 37 cases of cause undetermined, a prolonged period of follow up and period of reevaluation was necessary.
